A continuous site-specific mural connecting the Southside, downtown, the Medical Center and the landscape of South Texas through one visual journey.

The Concept

Place.
Culture.
Community.

Designed as a continuous visual journey, the mural moves through recognizable San Antonio landmarks, traditions and everyday life. Historic missions and community recreation transition into downtown, the River Walk, music and dance before opening into South Texas landscape and nature.

Rather than treating the wall as a series of isolated scenes, the imagery overlaps and flows across the architecture as one connected portrait of place.

The result is an institutional mural that feels unmistakably San Antonio while still serving the building: readable from across the lobby, energetic up close and integrated into the upper-level perimeter.

The Visual Journey

One city.

The mural is organized by movement rather than hard borders. Each section hands visual cues into the next — architecture, people, flora, color and gesture carrying the viewer across San Antonio.

That continuity mattered because the work is experienced from multiple viewpoints as visitors move through the lobby and upper level.

01 • Southside + Missions

Where the
journey begins.

The opening section draws from San Antonio’s historic Southside: mission architecture, trails, fishing and community activity. The imagery establishes a sense of place before the mural begins moving toward the urban core.

02 • Downtown

Into the
heart of the city.

Downtown landmarks, the River Walk and cultural traditions move into the center of the composition. Bold color and simplified forms keep the imagery legible from the floor below while still allowing individual moments to emerge at closer range.

03 • People + South Texas

From the city
to the landscape.

The later section opens into people, wildlife and native plants, creating a visual release from the denser downtown imagery. Bluebonnets, wildflowers and a deer shift the mural toward the broader South Texas environment.

Art in the Architecture

Built for
the room.

Installed high above the lobby, the mural wraps the upper-level perimeter and is experienced from multiple viewpoints as visitors move through the building. The simplified graphic language and saturated palette keep the imagery readable across distance while allowing individual moments to emerge at closer range.
