The Idea

Painted

city.

Color San Antonio! was conceived as a mural that could become a shared experience. The finished composition celebrates recognizable San Antonio landmarks, architecture and the historic Pearl district, but the process was just as important as the final image.

The design deliberately balanced detailed passages with large open shapes. Experienced painters could work inside the more intricate areas, while children, families and first-time participants could comfortably add color to larger sections.

The result turned a mural commission into a live public event: visitors could watch the image develop, meet the artist and physically leave their mark on the finished work.

The mural began as clean linework and gradually became a collective painting surface. The structure of the composition gave community participants clear places to contribute without losing the overall design.

That balance — professional direction with genuine public participation — was central to the project. The finished piece carries the marks of the people who helped build it.

A mural built

The composition started as a large-scale line drawing with recognizable San Antonio and Pearl imagery. Open shapes created an accessible framework for community participation while preserving a strong overall visual structure.

02 • Community painting

Everyone gets
a place in the picture.

Families, visitors and first-time painters were invited into the process. Participants could work within clearly defined areas while Mike guided the larger composition and continued building detail around them.

03 • Artist + community

More than a
finished wall.

The event brought the artwork, the artist and the public into the same space. Conversations, photographs and hands-on painting became part of the project itself rather than something that happened around it.
